This is the official site of Birdsong Micropress, a lil publishing outfit located in Williamsburg (not the historic one), and is comprised of an array of serialized zines and one-shots by various birdsong writers/artists, and the interview series Five on It. Contributors comprise The Birdsong Collective.

Five On It — with Kelie + Sto of Cinders

Posted on by admin

I can’t believe the day is almost here.  About month ago I mentioned Cinders Gallery would be closing its doors at 103 Havemeyer at the end of the year (rent hike), and the end of the year is upon us. Sad Face. Saddest face in America. I mean, they’re not closing closing, just changing things up a bit, just a flesh wound– and I hear they should be reawakening somewhere new sometime soon in the spring.  If yr around Thursday evening, Cinders is having a FUNeral service for the dear departed gallery space on Havemeyer, with performances and merriment and gusto.  It starts at 6 so come get yr cry on.

What Cinders has meant to me:

1) They’ve sold birdsong and Scorcher zines in the past, and always let me hang up flyers and put free shit by the door.

2) It’s where, at the tail end of 2007, I first picked up an issue of the “ABC: Another Booklyn Chapbook” series, consequently started zinemaking at Booklyn, and met Cat Glennon– who became a good friend and regular birdsong art contributor (and just made our last masterful cover).

3) Even before that, it was on the way to (or from) a Cinders art show that Chantal and I first went to Black Betty (also, RIP), where we would later spend every Monday of the summer with Michelle and frozen margaritas, singing “Dancing Queen” with Reverend Vince Anderson, Moist Paula, and that guy on the horn whose name escapes me but who Chantal was crushin on. Dave something?

4) All the rad shows. DIY. That David Bowie zine that Sto recommended that one time (it was the jam). OMG I think it was also the first place I ever got one of Esther Pearl Watson’s Unlovable zines, which became my favorite comic of all time. Not only did I get the chance to interview EPW for birdsong, but she also drew my name into the second collected edition of Unlovable (it’s on the joystick).  Memories.

Recently, Cinders’ owners Kelie and Sto– artists, curators, entrepreneurs, raconteurs– agreed to let me give them the ol birdsong interview treatment, so without further ado… FIVE ON IT WITH KELIE BOWMAN AND STO OF CINDERS GALLERY:
