MAIL CALL: Gypse Eyes #2 and The Worst #2

Today we got the sweetest thing: The latest issue of Gypse Eyes from fellow zinester Tyler Lafrenier, and The Worst #2: A Compilation Zine on Grief and Loss edited by For the Birds Collective member Kathleen McIntyre!

Gypse Eyes is “a magazine which investigates the hilarity and loneliness of sex, love, and relationships”; a compilation of photography, fiction and illustration under the wise guidance of Tyler Lafrenier. The zine came signed, wrapped in hand-printed plastic, and with a Lifestyles condom, sticker, and a few buttons inside.  I haven’t yet had the chance to give it a thorough readthrough, but one of its fiction authors is none other than birdsong contributor Max Steele!

A little different, The Worst investigates the grieving process through storytelling.  I’m trying to find a way of summarizing it without just quoting Kathleen’s entire introduction (which is brilliant, btw), but to sum it up:

“We are caught within the gears of a system that is primed to generate loss, trauma, and grief while leaving us scrambling and struggling for the resources and social supports we need to process the grief. To claim our grief–to claim that our relationships with each other matter– within this climate of isolation and denial is itself a radical act”

Instead of prescribing a routinized process of grief management, the Worst encourages a radical, individual approach through the grieving process by sharing our experiences and feelings.  And yours truly (Tommy Pico!) has a little story/poem in it called “For Loss,” which I read at Max’s Scorcher #4 release party awhile back.  The zine is carefully constructed, and I know it’s been a process and a long time coming, so Kathleen– it’s so gorgeous and you should be really proud :-)

    YOU! ITS ALL BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU, writing the things that you write that compilation zines happen! i am so glad you like it– I’m excited for it to be out in the world instead of spread all over my apartment (!)
